NIR – The technology that illuminates the brain

The Cerebro® team published a few months ago in a scientific journal a study of NIR therapy in patients with neurological conditions who have seen perceived improvements in everyday life.

We propose in this article a part of the publication, to make it better understand what the NIR is able to do.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is an innovative way to stimulate neuronal activity and improve neurological and psychological conditions. This term describes the use of Red and Near Infrared light to relieve inflammation and pain and tissue death.

PBM involves the use of light in a non-invasive and non-thermal way. The light from the visible and near infrared spectrum provokes cellular reactions triggering neuroprotective responses, improvements in metabolism, neurogenesis, improvements in blood flow and decrease in oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain.

Cerebro® created NIR, a medical device classified IIa that stimulates the entire cortical brain surface by emitting near-infrared light at a wavelength of 810 nm. Such light wavelength stimulates the glucose metabolism, ATP production, oxygen consumption and improvement in mitochondrial functioning. These triggered processes produce beneficial effects on each neurological disorder that is based on neuroinflammatory and neurometabolic deficits.

In the development of neuroinflammatory processes, three different types of cells are involved: the microglia, astrocytes and mastocytes. These three cells are part of the same team, releasing proinflammatory cytokines and neurotrophic factors. This is the reason why, neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory disorders need to be considered as two sides of the same coin.

In the study carried out by Cerebro® 29 patients, over the age of 50 and suffering from neuroinflammatory-based diseases, participated.

The subjects were asked to fill out a self-assessment questionnaire on the perception of symptoms both before and after the rehabilitative session with NIR treatment. The Questionnaire (Cognitive Self-Assessment Questionnaire – CSQ), based on Broadbent et al., 1982; Italian validation of Stratta et al., 2006) is composed of 25 questions that investigate cognitive symptoms in neurological disorders, for example memory, distraction, mental confusion, etc. Subjects underwent NIR therapy twice a week for a month.


Working with NIR centres nationwide, this pilot study shows that, as a result of NIR treatments, patients had a decrease in symptoms related to the disease, resulting in a perception of cognitive improvement. In particular, people with Alzheimer‘s, Dementia and Cerebral Vasculopathy felt good improvements in quality of life.

This innovative technology opens new horizons to the rehabilitative practices of patients suffering from neurological disorders and neurodegenerative diseases, but it is also a fundamental support for the prevention of diseases that are based on inflammatory processes at the brain level.
